Love, Lust & the Layoff List: A Very Serious Investigation Into Office “Romance” in Advertising

Let’s be honest. No one joins an ad agency for the money. You join for the chaos. The late nights. The free beer that somehow replaces HR.

And, if we’re really being honest the possibility that somewhere between a 2am pitch deck and a broken Nespresso machine, someone is going to make a terrible life choice.

Welcome to office romance in advertising. Or as it’s more commonly known: a case study in bad judgement with excellent kerning.

Every agency love story begins the same way.

A glance across the open-plan office.A shared hatred of the client.A mutual understanding that this deadline is fake, but the stress is very real.

Someone laughs a bit too hard at a joke that wasn’t funny. Someone else offers to “quickly run through the deck together.” Suddenly it’s 8pm, the cleaners are judging you, and you’re both trauma-bonded for life.

This is not romance. This is Stockholm Syndrome with MacBooks.

But advertising people are creative. We tell ourselves stories. This one is different. We’re adults. HR will never know. (HR always knows. They just pretend not to.)
