How Do I Stay Relevant in a Fast-Changing Creative Industry?

(And no, “posting more on LinkedIn” is not a personality.)

The creative industry moves faster than Joburg weather. One minute you’re the hottest designer in the WhatsApp group. The next minute, some 19-year-old in Durban with WiFi and Midjourney is creating visuals that make your agency reel look like it was shot on a BlackBerry (remember those?).

Relevance used to mean “good taste.” Now it means adaptability, speed, emotional intelligence, tech fluency and cultural awareness, all before your second flat white.

And if you’re asking, “How do I stay relevant in a fast-changing creative industry?” – congratulations. That question alone already makes you more relevant than the creative who still says, “I don’t do AI.”

If you’re still treating AI like it’s your creative nemesis, you’re playing the wrong game.

“AI is not replacing creatives. Creatives who use AI are replacing creatives who don’t.”

South Africa has always thrived on resourcefulness. We’ve built global campaigns from budget crumbs and unreliable WiFi. AI is just another tool – like Photoshop was in 1994 when you only had 1 undo… and Canva was in 2014.

Using it to increase speed without decreasing soul.
